Bert Kaempfert - Christmas Wonderland
Genre: Christmas/ Easy Listening
Quality: EAC Rip; WAV - Lossless
Bert Kaempfert, often described as the father of easy listening, was not just a practicing musician. As an arranger, he shaped an orchestra sound that was and still is an international success and trendsetter. Today his recordings are still being released all over the world, and he is the composer behind many world famous songs.
Long before the Liverpool sound even existed, it was Bert Kaempfert who, with My Bonnie, made the Beatles into recording stars – as early as 1960 preparing the ground for Paul McCartney, John Lennon & Co's phenomenal international career: they had the benefit of his knowledge, his skills and that creativity which he so undogmatically imparted.
The list of the solo artists who scored success after international success with Kaempfert's inimitable compositions reads like a Who's Who of light music: Frank Sinatra, Al Martino and Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Bassey, Sarah Vaughan and Peggy Lee, Nat “King” Cole, Herb Alpert and Johnny Mathis, Brenda Lee, Caterina Valente, Andy Williams and Nancy Wilson – to name but a few.
Kaempfert used many musicians who were available in Germany and other parts of Europe, including many of the same players who played for James Last, Kai Warner and Roberto Delgado. He featured such top soloists as trumpeters Charly Tabor, Werner Gutterer, Manfred Moch and Ack van Rooyen, trombonists Ake Persson and Jiggs Whigham, and sax/flute player Herb Geller. Drummer Rolf Ahrens supplied the characteristically simple but steady beat, often playing just a snare drum with brushes.
Another contributor to Kaempfert's music was guitarist/bassist Ladislav "Ladi" Geisler, who popularized the famous "knackbass" (crackling bass) sound, which became the most distinctive feature of many Kaempfert recordings - a treble staccato bass guitar sound in which the bass string was plucked with a pick and immediately suppressed to cancel out any sustain. It was Geisler who lent his guitar amplifier to The Beatles for their recording session with Tony Sheridan, after the band's own equipment proved to be inadequate for recording purposes.
The Barenaked Ladies got it right when they referenced Kaempfert in the hit song "One Week". The lyric stated "Bert Kaempfert's got the mad hits."
No other time is celebrated in as many different and sophisticated ways all over the world as Christmas. And the same holds true for our musical perceptions and emotions, which are shaped and influenced in the most distinct ways. In 1963, Bert Kaempfert transformed the typical cheerful and carefree North American rhythms he loved so much into his unique and swinging sound with his Christmas production CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND. During the past, the original album CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND was succesfully published several times under different album titles and with various covers.
